A writer by the name of Perri Ormont Blumberg wrote an article in the New York Post yesterday titled “8 amazing American streets you’ve never heard of.” And guess what? Matlacha’s Pine Island Road made this short list!

Here’s what Mr. Blumberg wrote:

“While any Floridian spring break flings may have faded from memory, this thoroughfare in the Fort Myers area is worth an encore trip as an adult. The bright segment reads more quaint fishing village than rowdy vacation hub, courtesy of its neon-colored fish markets, indie shops and galleries. From here, continue to Leoma Lovegrove Gallery & Gardens and while away an afternoon painting coconuts. Or trade culture for people-watching at Bert’s Bar and Grill. At this dockside joint, indulge in a pitcher of “Bert’s Brew” beer while live music takes you right back to those college glory days.”

This only scratches the surface of the fun you’ll find when you visit Matlacha Island. Perri simply didn’t have the time or space to do more than whet the appetite. But thanks to my association with Bealls Department Store and the work I’ve done on behalf of Southwest Florida at the behest of the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau, tens of thousands already know what Perri Ormont Blumberg only recently discovered. If you’re not one of them, you absolutely, positively need to make a trip to our sunny little island (yes, it’s just 1 mile square). And when you come, plan on starting and ending your respite at Lovegrove Gallery & Gardens. We have a whole lot more than coconuts for you to see and do.
